The global chocolate industry, valued at $130 billion, faces significant challenges from environmental and economic pressures. To combat these issues, Planet A Foods has developed a sustainable, cocoa-free chocolate alternative called ChoViva.

The German startup recently secured $30 million in Series B funding, enabling it to scale production from 2,000 to over 15,000 tons annually. The funds will support expansion into new markets, including the UK and France, following successful launches in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Founded by twins Drs. Max and Sara Marquart, Planet A Foods utilizes proprietary fermentation technology to create a chocolate-like flavor from locally sourced sunflower seeds. This process reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional chocolate production.

ChoViva products, which debuted in German supermarkets in 2023, are rapidly expanding across Europe and are featured in over 20 products available in more than 42,000 retail stores. Major partners include Lambertz, Lindt, and Rewe Group.

Dr. Maximilian Marquart emphasized that the funding marks a significant milestone for the company, positioning it as a leading player in the sustainable food industry. Investors highlighted the importance of supporting innovative solutions for sustainable food production, reflecting a growing trend towards climate-conscious food systems.
