Karwa Chauth: A Celebration of Love and Devotion in India

Karwa Chauth is a significant festival celebrated by married Hindu women in India, primarily observed in North India. This year, it falls on October 20. The festival involves a day-long fast where women abstain from food and water for the well-being and longevity of their husbands, engaging in prayers and rituals throughout the day.

The origins of Karwa Chauth can be traced back to ancient traditions that emphasize the bond of love and devotion between married couples. Women perform rituals from sunrise until the sighting of the moon, followed by breaking their fast after a puja.

Before dawn, women partake in a pre-fast meal called 'Sargi,' which includes nutritious foods. In the evening, they gather to view the moon through a sieve, offering prayers for their husbands’ health. Once the moon is sighted, they break their fast with water and food offered by their husbands, symbolizing unity and love.

Women often dress in beautiful traditional attire, commonly in red or other auspicious colors, adorned with jewelry and mehndi designs. This year, inspirations for outfits include Janhvi Kapoor's elegant red zari work saree and Kareena Kapoor's chic red kurta dress with a bandhani dupatta.

Karwa Chauth not only highlights the cultural significance of marital bonds but also brings communities together, celebrating love and commitment.
