G20 Summit in Rio Focuses on Global Inequality and Sustainable Development

The G20 summit, scheduled for November 18-19, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will address pressing global issues such as hunger, poverty, and inequality. Brazil, holding the rotating presidency, prioritizes sustainable development and reforming global governance.

The G20, comprising 19 nations and two regional organizations, the European Union and African Union, represents 85% of global GDP and three-quarters of global trade. Key participants include US President Joe Biden and China's President Xi Jinping. Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend, citing concerns over the summit's dynamics amid an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against him.

In the lead-up to the main event, Brazil is hosting a G20 Social Forum to amplify civil society's input in discussions. Previous G20 summits have shown tensions regarding Russia's actions in Ukraine, leading to a lack of unity among leaders.
