Austria's Freedom Party Projected to Win General Election Amidst Political Shift

In Austria's general election held on September 29, 2024, the Freedom Party (FPO) is projected to secure a significant victory over the governing Austrian People's Party (OVP). According to a projection by pollster Foresight for broadcaster ORF, the FPO, led by Herbert Kickl, received approximately 29.1% of the votes, while Chancellor Karl Nehammer's OVP followed closely with 26.2%.

The center-left Social Democrats are projected to finish third with around 20.4% of the vote. Despite leading in the polls for over a year, the FPO may face challenges in forming a government, as Nehammer has repeatedly ruled out coalition talks with them. Additionally, President Alexander Van der Bellen, representing the Greens, has stated he will not appoint Kickl as Chancellor.

The FPO is known for its critical stance on Western sanctions against Russia and advocates for strict immigration measures, including the deportation of refugees at the state border. This election outcome could signal a significant shift in Austria's political landscape and its approach to key issues, including immigration and international relations.
