Indonesia Aims for Net Zero by 2050 with Renewable Energy

Jakarta, Indonesia - November 20, 2024. President Prabowo Subianto expressed confidence that Indonesia can achieve its "net zero" target by 2050, leveraging the country's abundant natural resources for renewable and environmentally friendly energy.

"We are committed to renewable and green energy. We are blessed with abundant natural resources," stated Prabowo during the third session of the G20 Summit in Brazil.

One significant achievement in utilizing natural resources is the conversion of palm oil into biodiesel, an alternative to fossil fuel.

Additionally, geothermal reserves are projected to become a new energy source, expected to meet national needs and phase out coal-fired power plants.

"We plan to shut down coal power plants and all fossil fuel plants within the next 15 years. We also aim to build over 75 gigawatts of renewable energy in the same timeframe," Prabowo noted.

The President highlighted Indonesia's geographical advantage along the equator, which allows for optimal solar energy utilization.

"We have more than enough sunlight for solar-based energy. We possess other renewable energy sources, which is why we are very optimistic about achieving zero emissions before 2050," he added.

The G20 Summit's third session focused on "Sustainable Development and Energy Transition," emphasizing the need for collective action to address global environmental issues.
