Rescue Efforts for African Lions Amid Violence in Sinaloa

In Sinaloa, Mexico, the Ostok Sanctuary's rescue unit has successfully saved another African lion cub, bringing the total to nine felines rescued in just two months amidst escalating violence in the region.

The latest cub, approximately eight months old, was found in El Fuerte and transferred to Ahome in critical health. Ernesto Zazueta, president of the Association of Zoos, Breeders, and Aquariums of Mexico (Azcarm), reported that the cub was discovered in a small box inside a trailer, suffering from dehydration, malnutrition, and severe stress.

Currently in quarantine, the male lion cub is being carefully fed as it struggles to accept and digest food. Special supplements are also being provided to help it regain weight and address its health issues.

In addition to the lion cub, the sanctuary has rescued eight Bengal tigers over the past two months, found abandoned or caught in crossfire during violent confrontations in various municipalities of Sinaloa. Zazueta expressed concern over the increasing violence that threatens the sanctuary's ability to continue its vital work in providing a second chance for these animals.

Efforts by Azcarm and Ostok Sanctuary, in collaboration with authorities like Profepa and Sedena, have also included the rescue of various birds of prey and reptiles affected by the ongoing violence.
