New York - IBM is developing Quantum Starling, a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. This initiative includes the new IBM Quantum Nighthawk processor, scheduled for release later this year.
Quantum Starling will be built at the IBM Poughkeepsie Lab in New York. The company aims to build the Quantum Loon chip in 2026, followed by the Quantum Kookaburra processor module. The Quantum Cockatoo adapter is planned for 2027.
The Quantum Nighthawk will replace the Quantum Heron processor. Nighthawk can run quantum circuits with 5,000 gates, with plans to increase this to 15,000 gates by 2028.
This development follows advancements from other tech companies. Microsoft unveiled its first quantum computing chip "Majorana" in February. Nvidia announced the establishment of the NVAQC research center in Boston in March. Cisco entered the race in May with its new quantum computing chip.
The quantum computing startup PsiQuantum has been valued at $6 billion, indicating growing investor interest in the field.
