Google's AI-Powered Weather Lab Predicts Hurricanes with Advanced Accuracy

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Google DeepMind has launched Weather Lab, an interactive website utilizing artificial intelligence to predict hurricanes. The new tool offers live and historical AI weather models, including a tropical cyclone model.

The cyclone model forecasts a storm's formation, trajectory, intensity, size, and shape, generating 50 potential scenarios up to 15 days in advance. This allows experts to anticipate a cyclone's path and intensity more effectively.

Weather Lab allows experts to compare AI weather models with physics-based models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The AI model has shown improved accuracy in predicting storm paths, offering potential for earlier warnings and better preparation for severe weather events.

The lab is currently running several AI weather models in real-time and includes two years of previous predictions for evaluation by researchers. It's important to note that Weather Lab is a research tool and not an official warning system, and users should still rely on official weather services.
