Millie Alcock's DCU Supergirl Film Slated for June 26, 2026 Release

The official premiere date for the DC Universe film centered on Supergirl, starring Millie Alcock as Kara Zor-El, has been locked in for June 26, 2026. This highly anticipated movie represents the second feature-length installment within the newly established DCU framework. It will follow the debut of the Superman picture, which is currently scheduled to arrive sometime in 2025. Taking the helm as director is Craig Gillespie, known for his distinctive visual flair in projects like I, Tonya and Cruella. The screenplay has been penned by Ana Nogueira.

The narrative foundation for the film draws significant inspiration from the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This specific run, created by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, originally published between June 2021 and February 2022, sets a compelling tone. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have characterized the upcoming movie as a sprawling cosmic fantasy. A substantial portion of the action is expected to unfold away from Earth, providing ample opportunity to delve into the character’s profound trauma and explore some of her darker psychological aspects.

Gunn has previously emphasized a key distinction between Kara and her cousin, Superman. While Superman was raised by loving parents on Earth, Supergirl grew up amidst the wreckage of Krypton. This upbringing, marked by witnessing widespread devastation, is expected to forge a more hardened and perhaps embittered version of the character. This contrast is central to understanding the emotional landscape of the film.

Nogueira’s script has received the full endorsement of Gunn and Safran, focusing on crafting a cohesive, three-act structure while faithfully retaining the core themes and essential characters from the source material. The confirmed cast includes Alcock in the lead role, alongside Jason Momoa reprising his association with DC, this time as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. Additionally, Matthias Schoenaerts is set to portray the antagonist, Krem of the Yellow Hills.

Jason Momoa, who previously portrayed Aquaman in the now-concluded DCEU continuity, has long expressed enthusiasm for playing Lobo. He has described the character as a long-haired, cigar-smoking, motorcycle-riding alien mercenary. Gunn confirmed that Momoa was his absolute first choice for the role, indicating a strong creative alignment for this particular casting decision.

Director Gillespie is anticipated to infuse the project with his signature energetic, almost rock-and-roll aesthetic. This stylistic approach suggests the Supergirl movie will possess a markedly different tone compared to the more grounded narrative expected from the Superman feature. Millie Alcock, recognizable to audiences for her portrayal of the young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, was Gunn’s initial suggestion for the Supergirl mantle. The resulting film promises to present a less idealized, more flawed interpretation of Kara Zor-El, burdened by the catastrophic loss of her home world.
