Australia and Japan Finalize $6.5 Billion Frigate Deal
Edytowane przez: Svetlana Velgush
Australia has awarded a significant defense contract to Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) for the construction of advanced warships. The agreement, valued at approximately $6.5 billion, involves the delivery of upgraded Mogami-class multi-role frigates to the Royal Australian Navy, marking Japan's largest defense export since lifting its military export ban in 2014.
The decision follows a competitive selection process, with MHI's Mogami-class frigate chosen over Germany's MEKO A-200 design. The new frigates are designed to enhance Australia's naval capabilities, featuring advanced combat systems and a reduced crew requirement compared to existing vessels. The first three ships are scheduled to be built in Japan, with the remaining eight to be constructed in Australia, reflecting a deepening defense cooperation between the two nations.
This collaboration underscores the strengthening bilateral relationship between Australia and Japan, highlighting their shared commitment to regional security and defense industry development.
