UN Humanitarian Aid Convoy to Sudan on December 27, 2024

On December 27, 2024, a significant humanitarian aid convoy is set to deliver essential supplies to Sudan, amidst a growing famine crisis affecting millions. This initiative follows negotiations between UN agencies and local community groups with the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The convoy, comprising 28 trucks, will transport vital food and health supplies to Al Bashayer Hospital and other medical facilities in Khartoum. UNICEF has contributed five trucks to this mission, emphasizing the urgent need for aid in the region. Ms. Tariq, a representative from the Sudanese humanitarian group Emergency Response Rooms, expressed the critical situation, stating, "Here in Khartoum, we are in desperate need of this aid. We've been waiting for it and trying many ways to go around this, but the only way to help reduce the famine effect in Khartoum right now is to receive this aid."

Recent reports from food security experts indicate that Sudan is experiencing a worsening famine crisis, with approximately 24.6 million people, nearly half the population, requiring immediate food assistance. The Integrated Food Phase Classification (IPC) has raised alarms about the dire conditions.

The backdrop of this humanitarian effort is a prolonged civil conflict that began following a coup in 2021, which has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Estimates suggest that up to 150,000 individuals have lost their lives in the ongoing violence, with over 11 million people forced to flee their homes.

Despite various mediation attempts to resolve the conflict between the army and the RSF, a peaceful resolution remains elusive. The delivery of this aid convoy represents a critical moment in the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
