BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Beirut on Friday to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah with Lebanese officials, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati. This visit comes amid a backdrop of intensified military actions, including recent Israeli airstrikes that have escalated tensions in the region.
During his visit, Araghchi emphasized Iran's unwavering support for Lebanon and its resistance against Israeli aggression. He called on regional governments to firmly back Lebanon, particularly in light of Israel's attacks. The Iranian minister's presence in Lebanon is seen as a significant political gesture, especially following threats from Israel regarding potential strikes on Iranian aircraft headed for Beirut.
Araghchi stated that Iran is prepared to retaliate strongly if Israel continues its military actions, particularly after recent missile attacks aimed at Israeli targets. He also highlighted the necessity of a ceasefire in the region, conditional upon the respect for Lebanese rights and a simultaneous halt to hostilities in Gaza.
