Brazil's X Platform Remains Blocked Over Fine Payment Issues

The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, remains suspended in Brazil due to its failure to correctly deposit fines related to misinformation and hate speech. The Supreme Federal Court of Brazil announced that X deposited a total of 28.6 million reais (approximately 5.2 million dollars) into the wrong bank account, preventing the platform's reactivation until the issue is resolved.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes ordered that the funds be transferred to the appropriate account at Banco do Brasil, which is tied to the legal proceedings. The court verified that the payment was made to Caixa Econômica Federal instead, which is not linked to the case. X had previously informed the court of the fine payment and requested the restoration of access to its platform, which has been blocked since August 30.

This suspension stems from X's refusal to remove multiple accounts associated with misinformation and far-right content, particularly those linked to former President Jair Bolsonaro. The court's decision emphasizes the ongoing global challenge of regulating digital platforms and combating online disinformation.
