Uber Launches Robotaxi Service in Abu Dhabi with WeRide Partnership

Uber has launched a robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, marking its first international initiative to integrate various autonomous vehicles on its platform.

Customers can now book rides in autonomous vehicles from WeRide, with fares matching UberX and Uber Comfort prices. Initially, the service will include safety drivers, as it is not fully autonomous yet. However, Uber and WeRide plan to offer completely driverless rides by 2025.

WeRide, a startup from Guangzhou, China, has the necessary permits for driverless operations in the UAE, Singapore, China, and the US. Although Uber is not looking to expand this partnership beyond the UAE at the moment, WeRide's autonomous vehicles have been operational in Abu Dhabi via the TXAI app since July 2023.

WeRide had intended to go public in the US with a valuation of $5 billion, but its IPO has been delayed due to documentation requirements. The company also develops self-driving technology for shuttle buses and freight vehicles.
