Typhoon Ofel Hits Northern Luzon, Philippines - November 13, 2024

On November 13, 2024, Typhoon Ofel intensified into a Category 2 storm, threatening Northern Luzon in the Philippines. The storm follows a series of recent weather disturbances that have already caused significant disruption in the region.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Ofel is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 150 km/h. It is expected to make landfall along the eastern coast of Cagayan or Isabela on Thursday afternoon.

In the wake of the storm, the United Nations is mobilizing efforts to raise $32.9 million for vulnerable communities affected by recent storms, including Ofel. The Philippine Humanitarian Country Team aims to support approximately 210,000 individuals in regions impacted by severe weather.

As of now, the combined effects of Typhoon Nika and Ofel have affected over 52,000 families, prompting evacuations in 850 barangays across five regions. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that 43,704 individuals were evacuated to various centers.

In preparation for the approaching storm, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has placed affected areas on high alert, monitoring operations closely. Non-scheduled flights to coastal areas have been canceled, although some airports remain operational.

As the situation develops, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as the storm is predicted to intensify further before making landfall.
