Steve Coogan is set to portray former Irish football manager Mick McCarthy in the upcoming film titled 'Saipan', which will delve into the tumultuous events leading up to the 2002 World Cup. Filming commenced this autumn, with a release anticipated in summer 2025.
In a light-hearted meeting, McCarthy and Coogan discussed how the actor would depict the 57-times capped ex-defender. McCarthy humorously expressed his surprise at Coogan's casting, joking that he had hoped for a more glamorous leading man, such as George Clooney or Denzel Washington.
During his appearance on the Under The Cosh podcast, McCarthy praised Coogan's commitment to accurately represent his perspective on the infamous Saipan incident. He noted, “Steve wants to portray how it was for me and not just the script.”
As anticipation builds, McCarthy quipped about the potential for legal action, referencing his previous experience with Netflix's 'Baby Reindeer'. Fellow footballer Jason McAteer also weighed in, suggesting that the film might not cast Roy Keane, McCarthy's rival, in a favorable light.
