On January 13, 2025, the Chapel of Saint-Sépulcre, located in the heart of Place Garibaldi, reopened its doors to the public following a lengthy restoration project. This historic monument, which has witnessed the tumultuous past of Nice, is more than just a religious building; it is a significant piece of the city's heritage.
The chapel's history dates back to the 16th century when it was initially built on the site of a former defensive bastion. This site is historically linked to the siege of 1543, where the iconic figure Catherine Ségurane is said to have defended the city against Ottoman troops. Evidence of this event can still be seen today, as three cannonballs remain visible on the chapel's façade.
In the 18th century, as Place Garibaldi underwent renovations, a new chapel was constructed, adopting the name Saint-Sépulcre in reference to the tomb of Christ. This location also symbolizes the political power of the Savoy dynasty.
