China Plans Manned Expedition to Arctic Seabed with New Icebreaker

China is set to launch its first manned seabed expedition to the Arctic Ocean, marking a significant step in its polar ambitions. This mission will be conducted by the new ice-capable polar research vessel, Tan Suo San Hao, which is expected to enter service in 2025.

The expedition aims to reach the Arctic seabed, making China only the second country to achieve this feat after Russia's landmark 2007 mission. The Tan Suo San Hao has undergone initial tests, including underwater docking and low-temperature performance, and is designed for various applications such as polar scientific research, deep-sea resource exploration, and search and rescue operations.

This development comes amid China's increasing activity in the Arctic region, which includes joint patrols with Russia and a significant presence in Arctic shipping. The mission emphasizes China's growing capabilities in polar research and its strategic interests in the Arctic, as defined by its 2018 White Paper.
