Switzerland explores potential for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Switzerland is seeking to facilitate potential peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Swiss diplomat Gabriel Lüchinger is traveling to Moscow to explore the possibility of hosting a meeting between Ukrainian and Russian representatives.

This initiative follows discussions between Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky mentioned Switzerland as a possible venue for direct peace negotiations.

Lüchinger's trip to Moscow includes participation in a Kremlin security conference. He will also assess the Kremlin's willingness to engage in talks in Switzerland. Despite strained relations, Russia has maintained contact with Switzerland, signaling a potential openness to Swiss mediation.

Switzerland's expertise in hosting sensitive discussions and its perceived credibility among some Russian representatives are seen as advantages. However, recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities raise doubts about the Kremlin's commitment to negotiations.

If Russia accepts Switzerland's offer to host peace talks, it would represent a significant shift in foreign policy. Switzerland aims to leverage its neutrality and experience to contribute to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
