European foreign ministers convened in Rome on June 12, 2025, to discuss continued support for Ukraine and strengthen European security. The meeting included representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also attended.
The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine, including through further sanctions against Russia. Discussions focused on increasing pressure on Moscow and providing more aid to Ukraine. They also addressed the importance of holding Russian assets frozen in their jurisdictions until Russia ends its aggression and compensates for the damage.
The meeting also served to prepare for the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands, on June 24-25, 2025. Italy is aiming to reach the NATO goal of dedicating 2% of its GDP to defense spending in 2025. The focus will be on strengthening NATO's deterrence and defense capabilities, increasing defense spending, and maintaining support for Ukraine.
