Azerbaijan has commenced the construction of two significant solar power plants, a key initiative in its strategy to diversify energy sources and curb carbon emissions. The groundbreaking for the 445 MW plant in Bilasuvar and the 315 MW plant in Neftchala occurred in June 2024, marking a substantial development in the nation's renewable energy sector. These projects are a collaboration between the UAE's Masdar and Azerbaijan's SOCAR Green.
The financial backing for these ventures is substantial, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) each contributing $160 million. This multilateral support highlights global confidence in Azerbaijan's green energy transition. The Bilasuvar plant, covering 1,454 hectares, is projected to generate approximately 1.7 billion kWh of electricity annually and reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 442,000 tons. The Neftchala plant is expected to yield similar environmental benefits, with an estimated annual CO2 reduction of 314,000 tons. Both facilities are slated for operation by 2027, contributing to Azerbaijan's national objective of sourcing 30% of its energy from renewables by 2030. This endeavor is central to Azerbaijan's broader strategy to lessen dependence on traditional energy and foster sustainable regional development.
