Armenia Implements Temporary Visa-Free Entry for US, EU, and GCC Residents Through July 2026
Edited by: Tatyana Hurynovich
The Republic of Armenia has officially launched a temporary visa liberalization initiative, effective from January 1, 2026, until July 1, 2026. This strategic move is designed to bolster international tourism and catalyze foreign investment during the first half of the year. The waiver specifically targets citizens from 113 different nations, provided they hold valid residency permits from the United States, European Union or Schengen Area member states, or countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
According to the regulatory framework approved by the Armenian government, this visa-free entry privilege allows foreign nationals to stay within the Republic of Armenia for up to 180 days during a single calendar year. A vital administrative prerequisite for travelers is the possession of a physical residency card or a residency sticker. This document must have a remaining validity of no less than six months starting from the intended date of entry into the country. To ensure seamless and rapid border crossing procedures, the residency permit must feature information printed in the Latin alphabet and utilize the Gregorian calendar for all dates.
This initiative is a key component of the Republic of Armenia’s Strategic Tourism Development Program for 2026–2030, which was deliberated under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The government’s targeted strategy seeks to engage high-spending, pre-vetted travelers who already maintain residency in jurisdictions known for rigorous security and administrative standards. This includes the United States, the European Union, and the GCC member states—specifically the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. Lusine Gevorgyan, the Chair of the Armenian Tourism Committee, characterized the policy as a "clear invitation to travelers from across the globe," highlighting Armenia's commitment to accessibility throughout 2026.
The implementation of this measure coincides with ongoing efforts to enhance the country’s global profile as a destination rich in cultural heritage, famous for its medieval monastic complexes and striking alpine scenery. Notably, Armenia previously conducted a similar pilot program from July 1 to December 31, 2025, suggesting a systematic effort by the authorities to balance and sustain tourist arrivals during traditional "shoulder seasons." While the electronic visa (e-visa) system continues to serve travelers who do not qualify for this specific exemption, this temporary liberalization is intended to generate a swift and positive economic impact through increased visitor spending.
Against the backdrop of these simplified entry requirements, it is relevant to note that the U.S. Department of State suspended the issuance of immigrant visas for citizens of Armenia and 74 other nations on January 21, 2026, though this restriction applies strictly to non-tourist visa categories. The performance of Armenia's six-month visa waiver program will be scrutinized by policymakers as they seek to position the nation as one of the world's safest and most welcoming travel hubs. The possibility of extending this residency-based visa-free regime beyond its July 1, 2026, expiration date remains under consideration, with the final decision likely depending on the growth seen in tourism figures and foreign direct investment.
