On July 9, 2025, Algeria and Uruguay joined the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), bringing the total number of signatories to 57. The signing ceremony was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre during the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

Foreign Ministers Ahmed Attaf of Algeria and Mario Lubetkin of Uruguay represented their respective countries. Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan also attended the ceremony, highlighting the importance of ASEAN's expanding diplomatic reach.

The TAC, established in 1976, promotes peaceful relations in Southeast Asia, emphasizing respect for sovereignty and peaceful dispute resolution. This expansion reflects ASEAN's commitment to global peace and stability, following recent accessions by other nations.

The inclusion of Algeria and Uruguay is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between ASEAN and these nations. This aligns with ASEAN's 2025 theme of "Inclusivity and Sustainability," further promoting global cooperation.
