Mogadishu – The international community must not waver in its support for Somalia's counter-terrorism efforts, a United Nations expert urged. This call to action was made by UN Special Rapporteur Ben Saul on May 21, 2025, following an official visit to the country.
Saul conveyed his solidarity with the Somali people and government as they grapple with persistent terrorist threats from groups like Al-Shabaab and Daesh. He acknowledged Somalia's extensive efforts to prevent terrorism, including law enforcement, military operations, and strategies to combat violent extremism.
However, Saul also voiced concerns about human rights issues, including the use of military courts for terrorist suspects and the potential for counter-terrorism laws to infringe on media freedom and humanitarian aid. He encouraged Somalia to strengthen oversight mechanisms and address the root causes of terrorism through inclusive governance and conflict resolution.
