On Monday, Russia declared Amnesty International an "undesirable organization," effectively banning its activities in the country. The decision follows accusations that Amnesty International supports Ukraine.
Amnesty International, headquartered in London, vowed to continue its human rights work in Russia. Agnès Callamard, Secretary-General, stated the organization would persist in seeking justice for human rights violations in Russia, Ukraine, and elsewhere.
The "undesirable" status compels organizations to cease operations in Russia. Russian citizens who work with or fund such organizations face potential fines and imprisonment. Russia has designated 223 associations as "undesirable" since 2015.
