Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was elected President of the UN General Assembly for its 80th session on June 2, 2025, at the UN headquarters in New York. She secured 167 votes in a secret ballot requested by Russia. Helga Schmid, also from Germany, received 7 votes, and 14 delegations abstained. Baerbock succeeds Abdulla Shahid of the Maldives, and her term begins in September 2025.

As President, Baerbock will guide the session's work, represent the General Assembly internationally, and coordinate diplomatic processes. This extends beyond presiding over annual gatherings; she will also ensure the UNGA's efficiency and inclusivity. Her stated priorities include modernizing the UN, advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and fostering inclusivity.

Baerbock's election occurs during significant global challenges, including conflicts and climate change. She is the fifth woman to hold this position in the UN's 80-year history.
