Germany Halts Funding for Mediterranean Migrant Rescue NGOs

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Berlin, Germany - October 26, 2024 - The German Foreign Ministry announced the cessation of funding for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.

This decision follows years of financial support, with approximately two million euros annually provided under previous governments. Organizations like Sea-Eye, SOS Humanity, and Sant'Egidio have received funding.

The move reflects the long-held stance of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who views rescue operations as enabling human smuggling. This decision is part of broader efforts to curb migration, including border controls and restrictions on family reunification.
