Nice, France - June 2025 - Côte d'Ivoire's Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources, Sidi Tiémoko Touré, deposited the ratification instruments for the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 188 concerning work in the fishing sector during the 113th International Labour Conference.
The ceremony was attended by ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo and maritime sector representatives. Convention No. 188 aims to ensure decent working conditions for fishers, addressing aspects such as minimum working conditions, accommodation, food, health and safety, medical care, and social protection.
This ratification is significant for Côte d'Ivoire, where fishing represents 0.5% of the GDP since 2023 and provides income for over 680,000 people. The government has also adopted the National Policy for the Development of Livestock, Fisheries, and Aquaculture (PONADEPA 2022-2026), with a budget of over 1,000 billion FCFA.
