Uganda Suspends Military Cooperation With Germany Amidst Diplomatic Tensions

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Uganda has suspended military cooperation with Germany, citing alleged subversive activities by the German ambassador in Kampala, Matthias Schauer. The Ugandan army claims to have credible reports confirming Schauer's involvement with forces hostile to the Ugandan government. Berlin has dismissed these accusations as "absurd and unfounded." The suspension will remain in effect until the matter is resolved. The move follows criticism from Schauer and other diplomats regarding social media posts by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. These posts were deemed inflammatory. Some Ugandans have accused the German ambassador of working against their government. A German Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that there is no formal military cooperation with Uganda, so there is nothing to cancel. The EU supports the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which includes Ugandan troops. The situation is prompting calls for a diplomatic resolution to avoid potential repercussions from the European Union.
