Meta Secures Nuclear Power for Data Centers with Constellation Energy Deal

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

Meta Platforms has reached an agreement with Constellation Energy to support the operation of a nuclear reactor in Illinois for 20 years. This deal marks Meta's first venture into directly supporting a nuclear power plant. The agreement aims to ensure a stable power supply for Meta's data centers, driven by increasing demand from artificial intelligence. The deal supports Constellation's Clinton Clean Energy Center, which is currently subsidized by Illinois' zero emissions credit program. Meta's power purchase agreement will provide financial support for the plant's re-licensing and operations after the state subsidies expire in 2027. This agreement could become a model for other Big Tech companies looking to secure reliable and carbon-free energy sources. The agreement also allows Constellation to expand Clinton's capacity by 30 MW. The plant, which began operating in 1987, has applied to renew its license through 2047. The deal ensures a stable work environment for plant workers and provides a reliable energy source equivalent to powering approximately 800,000 U.S. homes.
