
Apple Targets 2027 Launch for N50 Smart Glasses Focused on AI Companionship

Apple Inc. is reportedly accelerating its efforts to redefine the wearable technology landscape, centering its strategy on a new generation of smart glasses known internally by the codename N50. While initial production cycles are slated for the conclusion of 2026, the public debut of these devices is anticipated to take place in 2027. This ambitious project represents a pivotal element of the tech giant's broader three-tier artificial intelligence initiative, where a significantly upgraded version of Siri is expected to serve as the primary interface for user interaction.
In a departure from the immersive but bulkier designs seen in systems like the Apple Vision Pro, the N50 glasses are designed without an integrated display. This minimalist approach mirrors the popular form factor of Ray-Ban Meta glasses, positioning the device as a lightweight AI companion. By leveraging sophisticated computer vision technology, the glasses will interpret the user's environment to provide real-time contextual information. Users can expect seamless integration for daily tasks such as capturing high-quality photographs, recording video, managing phone calls, and controlling music playback through hands-free voice commands, all powered by the capabilities of iOS 27.
To facilitate high-level spatial awareness and environment analysis, the N50 model is equipped with a specialized dual-camera system. One sensor is dedicated to capturing high-resolution visual media, while a second, highly specialized computer vision sensor continuously monitors the surroundings and calculates distances between objects. This dedicated architecture is engineered for low-energy spatial recognition, a critical requirement for a wearable intended for all-day usage. Apple is also focusing heavily on aesthetics, currently testing four distinct frame designs—ranging from large rectangular shapes to smaller oval silhouettes—available in a palette of colors including black, ocean blue, and light brown.
The development of the N50 coincides with a significant leadership transition within Apple's artificial intelligence division. John Giannandrea, the Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is set to step down from his executive post in the spring of 2026 to transition into an advisory role. Consequently, his portfolio will be distributed among Craig Federighi, Sabih Khan, and Eddy Cue. Stepping into the leadership vacuum is Amar Subramanya, a veteran who previously served as a corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft and spent 16 years at Google leading the Gemini Assistant project. This strategic hire highlights Apple's commitment to fortifying its internal base model development and deepening AI integration across its product ecosystem.
Beyond the N50 glasses, Apple's wearable roadmap includes an AI-enabled pendant roughly the size of an AirTag and a revamped set of AirPods featuring advanced artificial intelligence features. Together, these three devices form a "wearable trio" designed to create a cohesive ecosystem. While the pendant and upgraded AirPods may hit the market as early as late 2026, the N50 glasses are scheduled for a slightly later production start in December 2026 due to their premium positioning. This comprehensive hardware strategy aims to solidify Apple's dominance in the next generation of user interfaces, where specialized wearables may eventually challenge the long-standing supremacy of the smartphone.
