May 19, China. Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) projects electric heavy-duty trucks to capture 50% of the Chinese market by 2028, a significant rise from approximately 10% in 2023. This forecast was announced at the launch of CATL's No. 75 standardized battery swap pack and swapping solution.
CATL aims to establish a green battery swap network covering 80% of China's main cargo routes by 2030. The goal is to enable new energy heavy trucks to recharge in under five minutes. The No. 75 pack will facilitate the construction of battery swap stations along major transport routes, reducing swap costs.
Trucks using CATL's battery swap solution achieve cost savings of 62 Chinese cents (9 US cents) per kilometer compared to fuel-powered trucks. Savings of 20 Chinese cents per kilometer are achieved compared to natural gas trucks. Electrification of heavy trucks is crucial for China's transportation sector to meet its dual carbon goals, as they contribute 43% of road traffic carbon emissions.
