A Danish-German research collaboration is developing new quantum light sources for scalable quantum networks.
The project, EQUAL, is based on the rare-earth element erbium and is funded by the Innovation Fund Denmark.
The project started in May 2025 and will run for five years.
The project aims to create quantum light sources compatible with optical fibers, using silicon.
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) will develop new light sources using silicon, the same material found in everyday electronics.
These light sources will operate at wavelengths used in fiber-optic communication.
The research will lay the foundation for building quantum devices that can be integrated into today's technology.
