Starting June 20, 2025, the EU will require manufacturers to use an updated energy label for smartphones and tablets. This label will provide information on energy consumption, repairability, and durability, helping consumers make informed purchasing decisions and identify sustainable electronics.
The new label includes a repairability index based on criteria like fasteners, spare parts access, and software update duration. This index targets repair shops, aiming for efficient and cost-effective repairs even after warranty. A QR code links to a central EU database with technical information, energy consumption data, repairability details, and spare parts availability. Key components like batteries, displays, and charging ports will be assessed separately. The EU initiative promotes long-lasting, maintainable devices, encouraging manufacturers to design more sustainable products.
