New Eu Rules for Smartphones: Durability, Updates, and Repairability

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

Smartphones in the European Economic Area must meet strict requirements starting June 20, 2025. These requirements cover durability, update support, and ease of repair. The regulation, issued in June 2023, mandates specific design criteria for longevity. Smartphones must endure at least 45 drops from 1 meter without damage. Tests require at least four out of five devices to survive without damage. Foldable phones must withstand 35 drops in folded mode and 15 in unfolded mode. Screen material must have a minimum hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale. Devices must be protected against solids larger than 1mm and water splashes, meeting at least IP44 standards. Batteries must retain 80% of their initial capacity after 500 charge cycles. Software must include features to protect battery lifespan. Manufacturers must provide security, correction, or feature updates for five years. Updates must be delivered within six months of source code release. Clearer communication and availability of spare parts are also mandated. Manufacturers must provide information on battery endurance, drop resistance, and water/dust protection. Smartphones and tablets will also feature energy labels.
