EU Rules Boost Smartphone Durability

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

Starting June 20, 2025, new European Union regulations will affect smartphones and tablets sold within the EU.

These measures aim to improve the durability, repairability, and energy efficiency of these devices.

Batteries must retain at least 80% of their initial capacity after 800 charge cycles.

Manufacturers must provide security and OS updates for at least five years after a device's launch.

Essential spare parts (batteries, screens, etc.) must be available for at least seven years after a model is discontinued.

A new energy label will provide key information, including energy efficiency class (A to G), battery life, and repairability index (A to E).

A QR code will link to an online database with detailed product information.

These regulations stem from a European Commission regulation from June 16, 2023, supporting the Green Deal for a circular economy.
