ANA Holdings and Joby Aviation to Launch Air Taxis in Japan by 2027

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

ANA Holdings and Joby Aviation are set to introduce electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, or "air taxis," in Japan, with operations planned to commence in 2027. The joint venture aims to deploy over 100 five-seater vehicles, initially connecting Tokyo with major airports like Narita and Haneda. This initiative aligns with Japan's sustainability goals, as Joby's all-electric aircraft offer zero emissions and reduced noise pollution. Toyota has invested nearly $900 million in Joby, supporting the partnership. A public demonstration is scheduled for the Osaka Expo in October 2025, previewing how these air taxis could cut travel times significantly, such as reducing the Tokyo to Narita Airport journey to 15 minutes from over an hour.

This development is seen as a critical advancement for advanced air mobility (AAM) in Asia, addressing issues of traffic congestion and infrastructure. Joby's eVTOLs are designed for short-haul journeys, with a range of up to 150 miles on a single charge. The integration with Japan's high-speed rail network is anticipated to enhance multimodal transportation efficiency. The Civil Aviation Bureau will oversee the certification process for commercial use, ensuring adherence to Japan's rigorous safety standards, including meticulous planning for vertiports and noise mitigation. NASA testing indicates Joby's aircraft produce noise levels comparable to a normal conversation at 500 meters altitude. The venture is expected to invigorate Japan's aviation sector, with ANA envisioning air taxis for inter-city travel and support for major events. Toyota's manufacturing expertise is also expected to benefit the production of electric propulsion systems. Environmentally, these aircraft are key to Japan's 2050 carbon-neutral goals. While competitors are also developing similar technologies, Joby's partnership with ANA provides a strong strategic position in the Asian market. The collaboration includes pilot training programs and maintenance hubs, aiming for full operational readiness by 2027. Government backing for innovation suggests this venture could set global benchmarks for AAM adoption.
