OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health Integrating Longitudinal Patient Records via b.well
Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya
On January 7, 2026, OpenAI announced it has selected b.well Connected Health to provide the secure data infrastructure for a new dedicated feature called ChatGPT Health. This partnership marks a major move into consumer healthcare, allowing users to safely connect their personal medical records directly to ChatGPT to receive highly personalized and contextually accurate health insights.
Direct Access to Medical Records
Through b.well’s extensive network—which covers over 2.2 million providers and 320 health plans—users can now authorize ChatGPT to access their longitudinal health information. This includes lab results, medication histories, and insurance details. Instead of providing general medical information, the AI can now ground its responses in the user's actual clinical history to help them prepare for doctor visits or better understand their specific health trends.
Privacy and Secure Compartmentalization
A core component of the announcement is the introduction of ChatGPT Health as a separate, dedicated space within the app. To address the sensitive nature of medical data, OpenAI has implemented several strict privacy protocols:
- Data Isolation: Health-related conversations are encrypted and stored in a compartmentalized memory system, isolated from standard ChatGPT interactions.
- No Model Training: OpenAI explicitly confirmed that personal health data and conversations within the Health portal will not be used to train its foundational AI models.
- Consent-First Architecture: Access to medical records is entirely consumer-mediated, meaning no data is pulled without explicit, per-instance authorization from the user.
Actionable Health Management
Beyond answering questions, the integration with b.well allows ChatGPT to assist with administrative and care-coordination tasks. By analyzing a user's health record, the AI can identify patterns in chronic conditions, summarize complex clinical notes into plain language, and help navigate insurance coverage options. OpenAI emphasized that while the tool supports self-advocacy and health literacy, it is not designed to diagnose or treat medical conditions.
Global Rollout and Compatibility
ChatGPT Health is initially launching as a testing stage for a small group of users in the United States, with plans to expand to all web and iOS users in the coming weeks. While medical record integration is currently limited to the U.S., users can also connect global wellness apps like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal to further ground the AI's insights in their daily activity and biometric data.
