Google and Microsoft Report Significant Productivity Gains From AI in Coding

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Google and Microsoft are seeing substantial productivity gains from using AI in their coding processes.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated the company has observed a 10% increase in engineering capacity due to AI. This is measured by the increase in engineering capacity created, in hours per week, from the use of AI-powered tools.

Pichai also mentioned that over 30% of Google's new code is generated by AI, up from 25% in October. Microsoft UK CEO Darren Hardman reported that their GitHub Copilot coding assistant is writing 40% of the company's code.

These advancements have allowed Microsoft to launch more products in the last 12 months than in the previous three years. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted AI could handle half of Meta's developer work within a year.
