Australia to Implement AI-Powered Age Verification for Social Media Ban

Edited by: Veronika Radoslavskaya

Australia is set to ban social media access for those under 16, using AI-powered age verification methods.

A recent study confirmed the technical feasibility of age verification, which can be integrated into existing services. The law, effective December 2025, targets platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

The legislation, passed in November 2024, could fine non-compliant platforms up to AUD 50 million (approximately USD 33 million). Methods include facial detection and parental controls.

Experts note that these mechanisms are not foolproof and require continuous monitoring. The goal is to protect children from online bullying and mental health issues.

Concerns about privacy and circumvention exist, with some tech companies questioning the law's viability. The initiative places Australia at the forefront of protecting children's well-being.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that platforms must take "reasonable steps" to prevent underage access. The law's global implications are significant, with other countries considering similar measures.
