Steven Spielberg to Return to Science Fiction with ‘Disclosure Day’ on June 12, 2026

Cinematic titan Steven Spielberg, whose career box office earnings have surpassed the $10 billion mark, is preparing to unveil his original science fiction project titled “Disclosure Day.”

Set for release on June 12, 2026, the film marks the director's return to the genre that gave the world such iconic works as “E.T.” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Spielberg is once again collaborating with screenwriter David Koepp, with whom he previously worked on “Jurassic Park” and “War of the Worlds.” The production is being handled by Amblin Entertainment, with Universal Pictures serving as the distributor. John Williams has been commissioned for the musical score, marking their 30th project together.

Emily Blunt takes the lead in “Disclosure Day” as a Kansas City weather forecaster who finds herself at the center of a global event involving the discovery of alien life. The ensemble cast is rounded out by Colin Firth, Josh O’Connor, and Colman Domingo. Filming took place from February to May 2025 across New York, New Jersey, and Atlanta. O’Connor portrays a young cybersecurity specialist and whistleblower striving to bring “full disclosure” to the world as they evade pursuit by Firth's character, who is reportedly a contractor for the Wardex corporation.

The screenplay is based on an original story conceived by Spielberg himself, which Koepp then adapted for the screen. According to Koepp, Spielberg was more deeply involved in the writing process than in any of their previous collaborations, having provided an initial 50-page treatment. The cast also features Eve Hewson as the girlfriend of O’Connor's character and Elizabeth Marvel in the role of a nun. Colman Domingo described the script as one of the most beautiful films about humanity he has ever read, noting Spielberg's conviction in the potential of the human spirit.

With Spielberg's cumulative box office earnings exceeding $10 billion, “Disclosure Day” is positioned to be a major cultural and commercial event. Among his highest-grossing films, not adjusted for inflation, “Jurassic Park” remains at the top with more than $1.037 billion. The film is expected to debut in theaters and IMAX, moving from its original release date of May 15, 2026.
