Marvel Studios Plans X-Men Franchise Development Within Multi-Film MCU Architecture

Edited by: An goldy

Director Jake Schreier has confirmed that Marvel Studios is developing not just one, but several feature films dedicated to rebooting the iconic X-Men franchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Schreier, who also helmed Thunderbolts*, clarified that the creative team is exploring the franchise's long-term potential well beyond a single reboot project. This multi-film architectural approach signals a significant and sustained integration of mutants into the MCU narrative following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.

To script the X-Men film, Schreier is reuniting with writers Lee Sung Jin, creator of Beef, and Joanna Calo, showrunner of The Bear. The reunion of this creative trio, who previously collaborated on Thunderbolts*, highlights Marvel's commitment to recruiting high-caliber talent from prestigious television. Schreier noted that the writers will focus on balancing the X-Men's core ideological themes with the profound interpersonal drama they are known for masterfully depicting. According to the director, X-Men comics have always featured ideology intertwined with interpersonal conflicts of an almost "soap opera" quality, and understanding this duality will help create the most authentic iteration of the team.

Enlisting Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo is particularly noteworthy as they already have experience working with Schreier on Thunderbolts*, where Calo served as a writer and Lee provided script polishes. Schreier praised Lee's ability to "take small interpersonal dynamics and blow them up on a much broader canvas," making him the ideal candidate for an ensemble project like X-Men. While Michael Lesslie, author of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, was initially developing the X-Men script, the current draft is being handled by this team.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige previously stated that the "Mutant Era" would begin after the Multiverse Saga concludes, with every film following Deadpool & Wolverine serving as part of this new phase. This confirms the studio’s dedication to long-form storytelling. Jake Schreier himself was tapped for X-Men after his work on Thunderbolts* (released in 2025) impressed studio executives. Consequently, Marvel is signaling a return to expansive, multi-stage storytelling, where mutants will become the central lens for the MCU in Phase 7 and beyond.
