Streaming giant Netflix has officially confirmed the worldwide debut date for its forthcoming high-stakes thriller, Apex. Audiences can anticipate the film’s arrival on April 24, 2026. This intense survival picture is helmed by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur, who is well-known for his gripping cinematic visions in films like Everest and Adrift.
The screenplay for this project was crafted by Jeremy Robbins. Production duties were shared among several key companies: Chernin Entertainment, Ian Bryce Productions, Denver and Delilah Productions, and RVK Studios. The development of Apex also benefited from the financial backing of the Screen NSW Made in NSW Fund, an initiative established in 2020 specifically to bolster film production within the state of New South Wales.
Principal photography commenced in February 2025, with filming centered around Sydney and its surrounding areas. The narrative centers on Charlize Theron’s character, Sasha, who retreats to the unforgiving terrain of the Australian outback following a profound personal tragedy. This quest for solitude quickly devolves into a brutal game of cat and mouse when she becomes the target of a relentless predator, portrayed by Taron Edgerton. Adding significant weight to the ensemble cast is Eric Bana, who occupies a crucial role in the story.
Director Baltasar Kormákur, who also serves as a producer via his company RVK Productions, emphasized the critical role the New South Wales setting played. He noted that the Australian landscape was not merely a backdrop but an essential component, functioning as a character in itself to establish the necessary atmosphere. Kormákur stated that the rugged environment was indispensable for realizing the film’s vision.
Charlize Theron, who also produced the feature through her firm Secret Menu, described the role as one of the most physically demanding assignments of her career. She revealed that she personally executed the majority of the perilous stunts. This included demanding sequences such as scaling rock faces without the aid of footwear, highlighting the extreme commitment required for the part.
Netflix’s involvement, secured in February 2024, guaranteed the film immense global reach upon release. According to Screen NSW figures, the production commitment in New South Wales generated over 460 local employment opportunities. Furthermore, the economic impact is projected to inject more than 56 million Australian dollars into the state’s economy. The project also incorporated a commitment to practical training for emerging industry professionals through the Screen Careers program.
