Christopher Kane Appointed as Creative Director for Mulberry’s Women’s Ready-to-Wear Revival

Mulberry has officially announced the appointment of acclaimed Scottish designer Christopher Kane as the Creative Director for its women’s ready-to-wear (RTW) division. This high-profile move signals a deliberate and strategic re-entry into the apparel market for the British luxury house, which had paused its clothing production in 2020. The brand is framing this transition under a new initiative titled "Back to the Spirit of Mulberry," a project that places a renewed emphasis on the core values of British ingenuity and high-level craftsmanship to revitalize the fashion house.
The decision to halt clothing manufacturing four years ago saw Mulberry terminate its licensing agreement with the Onward Luxury Group, a move intended to consolidate the brand's focus on its core accessories business. However, CEO Andrea Baldo has identified Kane’s arrival as a pivotal milestone that opens a fresh chapter for the brand’s garment offerings. Baldo noted that Kane’s unique design philosophy—which balances bold creativity with intellectual depth and a profound respect for textiles—aligns perfectly with Mulberry’s historical legacy and the distinct British identity that defines the brand.
Fashion enthusiasts can expect to see Kane’s inaugural vision for the house during London Fashion Week in September 2026, with the collection scheduled to hit retail shelves in January 2027. Christopher Kane first rose to international prominence in 2006 following his acclaimed graduate show at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Despite the closure of his eponymous label in 2023, the designer has remained a significant force in the industry, notably through a successful creative partnership with Self-Portrait in 2024.
Integrating Kane into the leadership team is a cornerstone of the broader "Back to the Spirit of Mulberry" roadmap, which seeks to restore the company’s profitability through a comprehensive restructuring and simplification of its operations. Established in 1971, Mulberry has long been synonymous with iconic leather craftsmanship, producing world-renowned items like the Bayswater and Alexa handbags. Nevertheless, following a period of declining revenue and sales figures, the company is now determined to diversify its portfolio and re-establish itself as a full-lifestyle luxury brand.
This strategic pivot, led by Baldo, comes in the wake of Mulberry’s rejection of several takeover bids from Frasers Group. The current objective is to double down on "Britishness, cultural significance, and responsible material sourcing." Kane, who previously honed his skills at the helm of Versace’s Versus line between 2009 and 2012, is expected to infuse his signature aesthetic into Mulberry’s heritage. His role will be instrumental in evolving the brand's creative trajectory beyond leather goods, ultimately shaping the future of its ready-to-wear presence on the global stage.
