Italian fashion industry faces artisan skills shortage

Edited by: Екатерина С.

A critical skills shortage in artisan crafts is threatening Italy's renowned 'Made in Italy' fashion industry. This issue was highlighted during the presentation of Maurizio Carucci's book, 'Il saper fare italiano,' at the University of Florence's Design campus.

A study by Altagamma Unioncamere reveals a need for 75,000 skilled workers in the fashion sector. Projections estimate 483,000 employed in the industry by 2028. Fashion companies are struggling to find qualified personnel in 50% of cases, primarily due to a lack of suitable candidates.

Sought-after roles include tailors, embroiderers, hemmers, artisan cutters, model makers, and prototypers. The disappearance of artisan skills leads to the loss of intangible cultural heritage and the impoverishment of historical centers. In an era where consumers seek unique, sustainable, and high-quality products, craftsmanship represents a strategic resource for the country's economic and cultural future.
