Adidas and Willy Chavarria Apologize for Cultural Appropriation of Zapotec Huarache Design

Edited by: Екатерина С.

Adidas and American designer Willy Chavarria have issued apologies following accusations of cultural appropriation concerning their 'Oaxaca Slip-On' sandals. The design closely resembled traditional huarache sandals crafted by the Zapotec indigenous people of Oaxaca, Mexico, specifically from Villa Hidalgo Yalalag.

The sandals, featuring black leather woven straps and a substantial sneaker sole, sparked backlash from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and local officials. They cited the unauthorized use of indigenous cultural heritage and a potential violation of Mexico's Federal Law for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities, enacted in January 2022. This law aims to protect indigenous and Afro-Mexican cultures from appropriation and unauthorized use of their traditional designs and knowledge. Willy Chavarria expressed regret that the footwear was not developed in direct partnership with the Oaxacan community, stating his intention was to honor Oaxaca's spirit but acknowledging he fell short of the respect the community deserves. Adidas echoed this sentiment, reaffirming its commitment to honoring cultural heritage and engaging in respectful dialogue with the Yalalag community, expressing a desire to repair any damage caused.

This incident highlights a broader concern in the fashion industry regarding cultural appropriation, where traditional designs of indigenous artisans are often replicated without consent or compensation. Mexico's recent legal measures underscore a growing global awareness and a push for greater protection of indigenous intellectual and cultural property. The huarache, with a history spanning over 500 years, is a recognized symbol of Mexican cultural heritage and artisanal excellence. The Zapotec huaraches from Yalalag are particularly noted for their intricate, generations-old weaving patterns. Adidas's past brand narrative has included commitments to cultural heritage, but this event serves as a reminder of the importance of ethical collaboration and genuine partnerships that respect and uplift the communities whose traditions inspire new creations.
