Private correspondence from Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, sent to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2011 has surfaced, presenting a stark contrast to her public declarations. These emails, obtained by The Mail on Sunday, show Ferguson expressing significant gratitude and offering apologies to Epstein, despite her prior public statements disavowing any future association with him.
In an email dated April 26, 2011, less than two months after stating she would "never have anything to do with him again," the Duchess referred to Epstein as a "steadfast, generous and supreme friend." She conveyed an apology for a delayed response to his message, writing, "I must humbly apologise to you and your heart for that." Another message from January 22, 2011, addressed Epstein as "my dear, dear friend Jeffrey" and conveyed thanks for his financial assistance during a challenging period. These revelations have prompted questions regarding the Duchess's candor, particularly given her extensive involvement with children's charities and her career as a children's author. Ferguson has authored over 40 books, including the popular "Budgie the Little Helicopter" series and "Little Red."
A spokesperson for the Duchess stated that she had been advised to "assuage" Epstein due to his threats of defamation proceedings and that she stands by her public condemnation of him. The spokesperson further clarified that the email was sent in the context of advice received to mitigate Epstein's threats, and that the Duchess regretted her past association with him, emphasizing her primary concern for his victims. The Duchess's public stance in March 2011 included a statement to the Evening Standard admitting her involvement with Epstein was a "gigantic error of judgment" and expressing a commitment to never associate with him again.
These disclosures add to the ongoing public scrutiny of Epstein's associates and the transparency of public figures' connections. Epstein was convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor. He died in prison in August 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex-trafficking minors.
