Siachen Avalanche Claims Three Indian Army Lives Amidst Extreme Conditions
Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17
A devastating avalanche struck a base camp on the Siachen Glacier on September 9, 2025, resulting in the tragic loss of three Indian Army personnel. The incident occurred at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, in a region notorious for its extreme weather and treacherous terrain, which continuously poses significant dangers to the troops stationed there.
Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with specialized Avalanche Rescue Teams (ARTs) and Army helicopters deployed to the site. These teams worked under severe conditions, contending with low temperatures and the challenges of high altitude to conduct comprehensive search and recovery efforts. The Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army has honored the fallen soldiers, Sepoy Mohit Kumar, Agniveer Niraj Kumar Choudhary, and Agniveer Dabhi Rakesh Devabhai, recognizing their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
The Siachen Glacier, often termed the "world's highest battleground," is characterized by temperatures that can plummet to minus 60 degrees Celsius, coupled with frequent avalanches and landslides, particularly during winter months. The Indian Army has maintained a significant presence in this strategic area since Operation Meghdoot in 1984, securing vital high ground along the Line of Control in the Karakoram range.
This recent tragedy underscores the persistent perils of serving in Siachen. Historical data indicates that the harsh environment has claimed more lives than direct combat. For instance, in February 2016, an avalanche resulted in the deaths of ten soldiers, with one survivor succumbing to his injuries days later. In 2019, a similar incident led to the loss of four Army personnel and two civilian porters. The Indian Army has been continuously enhancing its infrastructure, connectivity, and medical facilities, including the induction of specialized equipment and heavy-lift helicopters, to bolster operational control and troop welfare in this formidable region. Efforts to review and improve safety protocols are ongoing to mitigate risks for personnel deployed in this challenging zone.
