A significant Saharan dust cloud is currently traversing the Atlantic, impacting the Caribbean and projected to reach the southern United States this week. This event, the largest of its kind in 2025, is causing hazy skies and raising health concerns across affected regions.
The plume stretches approximately 2,000 miles wide and 750 miles long, with dust concentrations reaching a high of 0.55 aerosol optical depth. Residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, are advised to take precautions, including staying indoors and using air purifiers.
The arrival of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) can suppress tropical cyclone development, potentially reducing hurricane activity. However, the dust particles can also cause respiratory irritation and affect air quality. The dust is expected to arrive in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi by late this week, with lighter concentrations reaching Texas by the weekend.
