Mijas Launches Wildfire Prevention Campaign Amidst High-Risk Season

Edited by: Anna 🌎 Krasko

The municipality of Mijas, Spain, has initiated a wildfire prevention campaign, emphasizing the heightened risk during the summer months due to climate and natural conditions. The area is designated as a high-risk zone for wildfires in Andalusia.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the severe consequences of wildfires through images depicting everyday life. Mayor Ana Mata highlighted the importance of prevention, citing past incidents that caused significant damage to the natural environment. The initiative underscores that a single act of carelessness can trigger a tragedy.

The campaign's messages, including 'Let only the sun shine this summer, not the flames,' are designed to resonate with residents and visitors. The Mijas Town Hall has also contracted the maintenance of the mountain range to ensure the forest is in the best possible condition, with a budget of approximately 1.2 million euros.

The works include forestry treatments, clearing, pruning, reforestation, and maintenance of forestry infrastructure. The Junta de Andalucía has also imposed strict fire prevention prohibitions from June 1 to October 15, including restrictions on open fires and vehicle access in forest areas.
